The Indian solar market is very dynamic. It has the potential to develop into an exciting business opportunity on a vast scale, providing great opportunities to European solar companies. At BRIDGE TO INDIA, we have worked with investors and technology companies over the last years and traced its development. We have seen the challenges and, together with our clients, have found ways to overcome them. One of these challenges has always been to have up-to-date, reliable and incisive information about the way the market develops. Based on our insights and experience of working with market participants, we have decided to compile a regular update that provides the key analyses, arguments and opinions needed by decision makers in the industry: the INDIA SOLAR COMPASS. This is the first issue. It will be published on a quarterly basis.

There are high hopes for the solar energy market in India. On a macro level, it makes great sense: The country is power deficient for years to come, the grid does not extend to every consumer and there is plenty of sunshine and land. Consequently, the government has very ambitious plans for scaling up capacity. The devil, of course, is in the details. So far actual installations are few. At the end of 2010, India had an installed capacity of only 24 MW of grid-connected PV and no CSP. However, in 2011 the market is ready to take off. A large number of projects are under construction and many more are planned.

The Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM), the policies of Gujarat and other states and emerging captive models are driving interest and investment. The recently concluded tariff auction under the JNNSM has led to very competitive tariffs on both the PV and CSP side.

These are the result of cost innovation, optimistic risk assessments, strategic choices and smart financial engineering. If the new projects will perform, they will break the ground for much larger growth to come. If not, investor enthusiasm may be dampened for years to come.

  • Are the new tariffs viable?
  • Will projects be bankable?
  • What factors are companies leveraging to be profitable at low tariffs?
  • What are the latest developments in the industry and in states?
  • Is there a first mover advantage in the Indian market?

The INDIA SOLAR COMPASS answers these questions and provides up-to-date information as well as relevant opinions and analyses. It has 20 pages of concise insightful analysis. Being a quarterly product, it provides our readers an opportunity to remain at the forefront of developments in the Indian solar industry throughout the year. It is of interest to all solar industry professionals, investors and institutions currently engaging with the industry in India and internationally.
